Understanding water balance for Swimming Pools and Spas

Understanding water balance is crucial for maintaining a healthy and enjoyable swimming pool environment. The acid content, measured on the pH scale, plays a pivotal role in achieving optimal water balance. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral, lower values indicating acidity, and higher values indicating alkalinity. For optimal bather comfort, the ideal pH for pool water is around 7.4, similar to the pH level of tears. However, to ensure effective chlorine function, the pH should ideally be maintained at 7.0 or slightly lower. Therefore, a pH range between 7.2 and 7.6 strikes a balance between comfort and chlorine effectiveness.

Even if chlorine levels appear sufficient, a pH level above 7.7 can hinder chlorine efficacy, potentially leading to bacterial contamination, especially in heavily used pools. Achieving the right pH balance involves a gradual process of adding acid or alkali as per recommended dosages and monitoring the pH levels over a 24-hour period. In regions with hard water, this process may be ongoing throughout the summer months.

Water balance encompasses more than just pH levels; another critical factor is Total Alkalinity (TA). An inadequate TA level can result in pH fluctuations, while excessively high TA levels can make it challenging to adjust pH levels effectively. The ideal TA level typically falls between 100ppm to 150ppm. However, many pool owners contend with high TA levels due to the naturally high TA content of tap water.

Maintaining proper water balance ensures not only water clarity and comfort but also maximizes the effectiveness of chemical treatments, promoting a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for all.
